Dundee , named for Dundee, Scotland, is located in Yates County in the Finger Lakes region of the state, approximately halfway between Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake. This is the heart of the Finger Lakes and offers an exciting combination of lakeside activities, wineries, and wilderness, relaxation and family fun for those wanting to escape from it all. The county has shoreline on three of the Finger Lakes-Canandaigua, Keuka, and Seneca, which provide beautiful scenery and abundant opportunities for recreation in all seasons. Yates County is also the largest grape growing county in the United States, outside of California, and is home to more wineries than any other county in New York. The town of Dundee is home to half a dozen wineries alone. The countryside surrounding Dundee is picturesque, filled with lovely Mennonite farms, award winning wineries, farm and craft markets and museums. Hiking trails abound in the area, and other recreation includes fishing and boating, golf, swimming, canoeing, biking, camping and wintertime skiing and snowboarding. The Dundee Area Historical Society contains an old schoolhouse built in 1890 filled with antiques, as well as local memorabilia and archives. Dundee also offers eclectic shopping from country stores to historical shopping districts and cozy bed and breakfast inns and lakeside dining.

The Finger Lakes Region is bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south. Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt. The lakes act as a moderator of the air temperature. The greater the volume of water, the more time it will take for the air to heat up in the summertime, and in winter, the heat the lakes have retained all summer is slowly released, moderating temps along the shoreline. Communities along the lakeshores will be warmer in winter and cooler in the summer compared to areas further away from the shore. This accounts for the successful vineyards in the Finger Lakes region. As the lake gives out heat in the late fall and early winter, the vineyards have an extended growing season. In addition, the weather in spring heats up more slowly than other areas of the state.
