Red-Hook is located in Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley Region, about 56 miles south of Albany. The town's interesting name actually comes from a Dutch term "roode hoeck," due to the large number of red berries found growing on the hillsides by Dutch explorers. The peaceful town of Red Hook is a farming community about 25 minutes from the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America. It contains the village of Tivoli and the hamlets of Annadale-on-the-Hudson, Barrytown and Upper Red Hook. Red Hook boasts a Federal-style period B & B, several antique stores, local farm stands and farmer's markets, a couple of award-winning wineries and an 18-hole golf course. It also has several nice recreational sites, including the Poet's Walk Park, which has gorgeous views of the Hudson River and the scenic Tivoli Bays National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Recreational Park of Red Hook offers an Olympic-size swimming pool, facilities for volleyball, softball, basketball and tennis and playground equipment. Several lakes in the area offer swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking. The spectacular Hudson River is about two miles from the town of Red Hook and offers interesting historical sites and estates to explore, hiking, biking, golf, boat tours of the river, swimming and fishing.

The Hudson Valley Region which generally refers to the canyon area of the Hudson River and surrounding communities in New York State, has a four-season climate. The first significant snowfall usually occurs in December, but there are variations. Some years there is no snow or ice and the temperatures and river stays quite mild - high 40s to low 50s. March is the month to look for the first signs of spring. Summers in the Hudson Valley are hazy, warm and humid. September can be a mixed bag of clear, cool Canadian air or humid, warm air with intense downpours. October is one of the best months in the region for hiking and other outdoor sports. The weather is cooler and less humid then, with crisp, clear views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the Catskills and the Hudson Highlands.
