Robbins-Rest is one of the 17 small communities located on Fire Island, which is an island on the southern end of Long Island. It can be reached by ferry from the towns of Bay Shore, Sayville or Patchogue. Fire Island is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay, approximately one hour from New York City. There are no paved roads on most of the island, and during the summer months, no motor vehicles are allowed. The beach community of Robbins Rest has gorgeous, windswept, white sand beaches and picturesque seaside cottages. The Fire Island National Seashore is accessible by car near its eastern end at Smith Point County Park, and swimming, surfing, boating, kayaking, wind surfing, hiking, camping and biking are all available on the island. Wildlife is abundant on Fire Island, including white-tailed deer, red fox and rabbits. Anglers fish for bass, blowfish, mackerel and winter flounder. The visitors' center on Fire Island is located inside one of the main attractions on the island - the Fire Island Lighthouse, which is a mid-19th century structure. Other attractions include the Sunken Forest, Sailors Haven, which offers a marina, beach and picnic areas, and Robert Moses State Park, located on the west end of the island, with a fishing pier, boat anchorages and a putt-putt golf course.

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April's warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
