Saugerties sits on the banks of the Hudson River in the southern region of the state, just 90 miles north of New York City. It's filled with beautiful Victorian homes, small shops and restaurants and has a charming rural atmosphere. The town of Saugerties is known as "Festival Town, due to the variety of special events held in the village each year. Most well known are the Annual Jazz and Art Festival, usually held in September, and the annual Hudson Valley Garlic Festival, also held in September. The unique garlic festival draws thousands each year to the Cantine Memorial Field, where chefs demonstrate their culinary talents, garlic farmers line the field with everything from garlic wreaths to garlic seeds, and live music, a cooking contest, arts and crafts and other entertainment keeps people entertained. In October, the town of Saugerties also holds an annual Mum Festival in Seamon Park, which is in full bloom with thousands of colorful chrysanthemums. Other Saugerties attractions include a waterfront park, a sports complex and marina, plus a delightful 19th century Village filled with shops, restaurants, a restored carousel and a historic museum. Another popular attraction is the Saugerties Lighthouse, built in 1838, and open weekends and holidays, Memorial Day through Columbus Day. The Saugerties Lighthouse Walk is a hiking trail that passes through a wooded tidal swamp that provides an excellent look at the ecosystem of the Northeast. Other recreational activities near Saugerties include swimming, boating, canoeing, horseback riding, golf and tennis.

Saugerties Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
