Southampton
Village is one of ten townships located in Suffolk County on the western end of Long Island on the Atlantic side. It is located approximately eighty miles from New York City on the South Fork of Long Island between Water Mill and Hampton Bays near Shinnecock Bay. Encompassing an area of 128 square miles or 81,947 acres, Southampton is the largest and most populous of the five East End Towns of Suffolk County, and has been called "the Palm Beach of the North." There are six incorporated villages within Southamptons boundaries, each with its own village administration: Sag Harbor, North Haven, Quogue, Westhampton Beach, West Hampton Dunes, and Southampton Village. The permanent population of Southampton is around 55,000 but swells to more than twice that number in the summertime. The Shinnecock Canal is the heart of the Southampton Town summer resort area and provides a waterway for vessels traveling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Peconic Bay. Attractions include bays, islands and inlets for swimming, boating, windsurfing, water skiing and fishing. Woodlands provide trails for hiking and wildlife viewing, and in addition there are several community parks that offer golf, tennis, volleyball, horseback riding and camping. Places of historical interest near Southampton include the Halsey Homestead, the Southampton Historical Museum, Sag Harbor Whaling Museum and the Water Mill Museum.

Long Island enjoys a four-season, moderate climate, given its relatively northern latitude-which makes it a pleasant place to visit year-round. It is the largest island adjoining the continental United States, extending approximately 118 miles east-northeast from the mouth of the Hudson River, adjacent to Manhattan Island. Winters tend to be unpredictable and summers can be warm and muggy, but offshore breezes help moderate temperatures. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when temperatures are mild. March tends to be rainy, but temperatures stay above freezing. April's warming temperatures makes it more comfortable and May is generally a gorgeous month on Long Island, weather wise. September to November is pleasant and mild, and the changing leaves make it a beautiful time to visit.
