Valatie is a small village of approximately 1,700 that is located in Columbia County on the banks of the Kinderhook River. The colorful name "Valatie," is Dutch and means "little falls," or "little valley." The town boasts a charming country club that is popular all year long, and the village of Valatie is the place to come if you want to experience taking a hot-air balloon flight. Flights depart from Valatie at sunrise and during the afternoon hours - weather permitting - and take visitors on a thrilling ride over the northern portion of the Hudson River Valley. Valatie is near Kinderhook Lake, which is a 375-acre lake that Native Americans used to call the "Great Fish Lake." As its' nickname implies, Kinderhook Lake is excellent for fishing for trout, northern pike, bass, walleye and perch, and it's also a good swimming lake. The whole area surrounding Valatie is great for exploring, antiquing and discovering the historic, fascinating little towns of the area, such as Chatham and Clintons Corners. The old Dutch village of Kinderhook is just minutes from Valatie and is home to the estate of Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States. Other nearby attractions include the Shaker Museum in Old Chatham, Lake Taconic State Park, Bash Bish Falls, Copake Lake and the historic museums of Van Schaack House and the James Vanderpoel House.

Valatie Weather & Climate

The Catskills climate has variations depending on the elevation. There is a totally different winter in the mountains and the higher plateaus over 1,000 feet. There, the grip of winter is strong and steady, and above freezing temperatures are less common. Average January temperatures are three to four degrees colder at elevations from one to two thousand feet and over seven degrees colder at elevations above two thousand feet. Snowfall is fairly uniform during the month of January in the Catskills. The third week of July is generally the hottest time of the year in the Catskills, and rainfall during the warm months is usually confined to a few days rather than spread throughout the month. September has warm days, cool nights and fog at dawn over the Hudson valley. By October the hills are a kaleidoscope of color, and the first hard freeze is usually at the end of October.
